I really do not see any advantages to desktops - sure, if you know how to assemble one, you can replace components over time much easier, and they can be more powerful than laptops, but frankly...I don't care. My previous laptop lasted me from 2016 or so to the start of 2023, and served me really well.

Laptops are great, but I'm a ThinkPad snob and love the classic keyboard which means I can't get too much newer than my 2012 T530.

There *are* a few advantages to PC though regardless:
  • Thermal design - much easier to have a PC with the same parts perform better due to being able to pump more power through it for better performance due to more adequate cooling. This is also why laptops with the same hardware perform vastly differently from eachother, as they are rated and configured for a different thermal design.

  • Modularity - easier to upgrade and/or just change components when seen fit, meaning that PCs are much better for longetivity than tightly integrated and custom-made laptops are. Also because PC parts are much more standardized, it's also cheaper as a result due to not having to customize a design, which increases cost.

  • Connectivity - please tell me if you see a laptop with 10x USB 2.0 ports on it, I'd love to buy up the entire stock. Now, where do I plug my GT610 on a laptop?
  • Less parts to break - this is actually an artificial problem, as if the OEMs let us buy the parts used to make the laptop, we could also service them much longer. Also PC parts are not tied to the system.

For literally anything else, there are MiniPCs, although their market has always been very inflated, probably because more commercial and industrial clients need them than consumers.

MiniPCs mount the back of the monitor very easily, so it's infinitely easier to swap them by the IT team if it breaks, and repair it in a different building, then put it back to a different location once another one breaks, repeating the cycle.

Although laptops do have their certain pros as well:
  • More lightweight even with a battery + power brick combined than a PC, while also containing all peripherals necessary already built-in.
  • You don't need more cables than a power cable + an Ethernet cable to get started.
  • Can be still similarly powerful as a PC (at the cost of weight and thickness though).

  • Consumes much less power during low utilization - they are designed to be battery-powered after all!
  • Not true anymore sadly, but laptops had similar selection ports to PC (albeit a bit less in count), so most of your PnP peripherals just worked.
  • In some cases you can still attach external PC peripherals, like DVD writers and GPUs to the laptop if it has the necessary ports exposed somehow.

tl;dr: most people are fine with a smartphone.
If you need a bigger screen, perhaps tablet + keyboard.
If you need more productivity programs, then laptop.
If you do very very heavy computations, then PC.

If commercial or industrial, MiniPC is fine for remoting into secure VM, tablet or laptop if the employees need to carry it around, and PC if it needs to be rugged.
