I usually go for the Super Paper Mario ost if I feel like listening to video game music. They give off a weird nostalgic liminal like comfort feeling, y'know?
Personal Favorites: Castel Bleck, Staff Credits, Mount Lineland, Tokens Please, Sammer's Kingdom, The Open Plane, Floro Sapien Caverns, Pit of 100 Trials, and Memory 1-4

I have a large collection of remixes and a set of chiptunes from every game I've played up through N64/PS1.

These I do not tire of: Mega Man Zero series' music (whether straight from the game or from the remastered soundtracks,) third generation Pokemon music, music from the Etrian Odyssey series (both straight up and the arrange albums,) TouHou music (mostly remixes!? Punk It! is great, especially Miracle Hinacle,) Gimmick!'s soundtrack, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles' OST.
Sometimes I'm in a mood for this or that, but these are the ones I can go to easily enough.

A little hard to come by, but blows away their first effort for the seminal sequele's socre. Once again Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori spread their wings and fly!

Besides Cold Storage all of them are established music acts outside of videogames, not really counts as "video game music" IMHO
the same goes for games like tony hawks pro skater
or forza horizon where the dnb channel consists of tracks from hospital records, not really counts as "video game music" either
it's just music played in a video game

my favorites for music made specifically for a video game:
chrono trigger & cgrono cross and brink of time ( crono trigger jazz interpretations )
turrican from chris hülsbeck
the flame in the flood
policenauts

Oh I totally realize that, These cats will make killer tunes for anyone in any field, baring certain conditions of course. But my "point" to that was that we have some of the best DJ's in the world who drop in for a quick stint and make video gaming that takes off in a rocket!

I'm more into modern videogame soundtracks:
-Horizon: Zero Dawn
-Some of the Square Enix 2D HD stuff like Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler
-The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
-The Witcher 3
-Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth (this game is so good and no one talks about it. But the sountrack is also very good)
-Disco Elysium
-Shovel Knight
-Nitronic Rush (the soundtrack is better than the one of Distance in my opinion)
-The Elder Scrolls III (I prefer it over oblivion and skyrim)
-Frostpunk (both base game and expansion)
-LEGO Island Xtreme Stunts: the soundtrack brings back so many memories
-Far Cry 3 and 6
-Ori and the blind forest
-Warhammer 40k mechanicus
-Many soundtracks from the Assassin's Creed series (especially 3, Origins and Rogue)
-I think that I will also buy the soundtrack of RDR2 in the future so that will be on this list in the future

These are the ones that I mainly enjoy at the moment.

This is the EXACT reason I made this thread. You hear something you've heard a long time ago, and it brings you back into focus, and then you are FLOORED as to all of the music accompanied to all of of the memories: Boss fights, having to go through that curve PERFECTLY, killing that last demon-ship. There are NO SUBSTITUTES as to video gaming music that brings up a wealth of memories, passions, triumphs, and of course, BEATING THE GODDAMNED GAME. BECAUSE getting stuck or dying before the grande finale blows.

Video game music is necessary not only for the game, but for the gamer as well. Cheers folks!!!

I barely listen to non game music at all

There's a TON of great stuff out there, but I'm assuming you already know that...

Not only do I listen to video game music, I collect VGM on vinyl :hrth:

Some of the most important ones (to me) in my collection:

PXL_20240513_001732538.jpg

Going across the rows, there's:
Top:
C418 - Minecraft vol. Alpha
C418 - Minecraft vol. Beta
Mariachi Entertainment System - Hecho En Hyrule
Hardspace: Shipbreaker OST

Bottom:
Shinobi III: Return Of The Ninja Master OST
Axiom Verge OST

PXL_20240513_002353946.jpg

Top:
Viktor Kraus - Halo C.E. Demastered
Halo: Combat Evolved OST (bootleg)
Deep Rock Galactic OST (rock and stone!)
Braxton Burks - Johto Legends: Music From Pokemon Gold & Silver

Bottom:
Halo Infinite OST

There's tons and tons more in my collection but this post would require a page of its own if I posted every VGM album I owned that I love lol.

Edit - and for the possibly concerned fellow record collectors out there, by "collect" I mean "buy and listen to and keep". I don't buy music to keep it sealed, and I don't buy it to flip it. Cut the shrink wrap and spin that LP!

video game music is no different than real music. Video game music is just music built based on the game that the music is for.

If one were to theoretically look at the SMB Ground theme but it wasn't actually from SMB but just a popular song made by j dunno... Beethoven, would you stil think of the song as being something from Mario, or the latter?
