Let's begin our adventure!
Before we start
Why should i not follow wiiu.guide, why should i download Mocha CFW & other questions
Question: "Why should i not follow wiiu.guide? It's apparently written by a known person from 3DS scene?"
Answer: wiiu.guide doesn't explain why you should use redNAND, CBHC and other stuff. It just forces it down your throat, and when we are talking about redNAND, it's useless if you're not a developer.
Question: "What does 'CFW' mean? I see it everywhere and i don't understand it!"
Answer: CFW means Custom Firmware. This term is currently used to homebrew which allow us to run unsigned apps and games.
Question: "Should i block my Wii U's MAC Address?"
Answer: No, please don't. You will be unable to access loadiine.ovh [Homebrew access gate, explained in Browserhax step] and you will be unable to load sites & play online!
Question: "What does CBHC/HBL/HBAS mean?"
Answer: CBHC - ColdBootHaxChi, permament CFW solution for your Wii U. HBL - Homebrew Launcher, it's your gate to Wii U Homebrew. HBAS - Homebrew Appstore, you will be mainly using this through this guide to download Wii U homebrew.
Question: "I checked other guides and Brazilian Method is named 'Wup Installer Method' on some."
Answer: It originally came from Brazil but people like to change names. Everyone names it the way they like.
Question: "What size of SDCard/HDD should i have for Brazilian Method?"
Answer: If you're looking to only run Homebrew Launcher [Homebrew apps overally] then i guess, 4GB SDCard will do. However, if you plan on downloading games, i suggest getting 16GB or 32GB SDCard. [You can use 8GB-16GB SDCard but you will be unable to put games above 16GB on your SDCard]
If you plan on using HDD with Wii U, i would suggest getting atleast 128GB HDD with Y Cable. [Wii U can't power extHDD's on it's own]
Question: "When i should use CFW and why should i use Mocha CFW? There's SigPatcher2sysmenu!"
Answer: I suggest using CFW like Mocha CFW/Haxchi CFW/CBHC CFW when installing games, or trying to run a game with "fake signed" DLC or out-of-region game. [Downloaded with Brazilian Method, this also applies to Virtual Console games downloaded using Brazilian Method]
You should use Mocha CFW only when you can't afford a DS Virtual Console game or you simply don't want to install Haxchi/CBHC. Mocha CFW like Haxchi CFW/CBHC CFW provides "iosuhax speed boost" which increases SDCard Read/Write speed.
There has been a recent discussion in this thread why i did not use SigPatcher2SysMenu instead. I'll explain why.
SigPatcher works like every other CFW but it's missing some features. It just gives you ability to run CFW-Only games. It also doesn't provide "iosuhax speed boost", making homebrew channels work even slower than they should. [Especially when homebrew like "RetroArch" needs to read from SDCard, if you're above 30 roms, it will just load longer than it would with CFW.
*NAND = Wii U's Flash Memory
Question: "Can i skip Mocha CFW if i have compatible DS Virtual Console game?"
Answer: Yes, you can. Head to Step 4. "Haxchi Installation"

1. Blocking Updates using DNS
I suggest using loadiine.ovh if you want 100% up-to-date DNS.
Nintendo can push out update which can patch every exploit out there. You don't want that to happen, do you?
Congratulations! You set up Update Blocking!
- Open System Settings
- Head to Internet then tap "Connect to Internet"
- Press X
- Select your connected connection then tap on Change Settings. Now locate DNS and set it to "Don't Auto-obtain"
- Set Primary DNS to 81.4.127.20 (TitleDNS "The Netherlands")
- Set Second DNS to 168.235.92.108 (TitleDNS "Los Angeles")
Nintendo can push out update which can patch every exploit out there. You don't want that to happen, do you?
Worry not, we have another method for you!
You can:
1.Block by URL Filtering
2.Block your Wii U's MAC Address [No internet access, no ability to run homebrew access gates, don't use it]
1.Block updates by URL filtering in your router settings
1. Go to System Settings then Internet then View MAC Address
2. Type the string in your MAC Address Filter (example: e3-ef-5a-32-96-gh)
You can:
1.Block by URL Filtering
2.Block your Wii U's MAC Address [No internet access, no ability to run homebrew access gates, don't use it]
1.Block updates by URL filtering in your router settings
- nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
- nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
- nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net
- nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
1. Go to System Settings then Internet then View MAC Address
2. Type the string in your MAC Address Filter (example: e3-ef-5a-32-96-gh)
2. Browserhax
In order to launch anything, you must find a way to execute unsigned code.
This browserhax is what we call "gateway" or "entry point" to the world of homebrew!
But before we get there, you need files!
Now you're asking yourself "What should i do with this?"
It's simple! Insert your SDCard into your PC!
Everything done? Now right-click on SDCard in Windows Explorer and click "Eject"
Now eject out SDCard from PC. This is where fun stuff begins!
You don't need to use your PC anymore! Woohoo! [In next step, actually]
This browserhax is what we call "gateway" or "entry point" to the world of homebrew!
But before we get there, you need files!
Download Homebrew Launcher v1.4 from here!
https://github.com/dimok789/homebrew_launcher/releases
Download Homebrew Appstore from here!
http://wiiubru.com/appstore/#/app/appstore
https://github.com/dimok789/homebrew_launcher/releases
Download Homebrew Appstore from here!
http://wiiubru.com/appstore/#/app/appstore
It's simple! Insert your SDCard into your PC!
You have SDCard in your PC now, great!
Now you need to format it!
Now you need to format it!
- Right-click on SDCard and then click Properties
- Click on Format and format it to FAT32 32kb Cluster Size
- Create folder named "wiiu" then inside that folder create folder named "apps"
- Store every homebrew there
- SDCard://wiiu/apps/homebrew_launcher/homebrew_launcher.elf
- SDCard://wiiu/apps
- SDCard://wiiu
- SDCard://wiiu/apps/wiiu/apps/homebrew_launcher.elf
- SDCard://wiiu/apps/apps
- Don't rename your SDCard to "WII U" or "WiiU" because it will not be detected
Everything done? Now right-click on SDCard in Windows Explorer and click "Eject"
Now eject out SDCard from PC. This is where fun stuff begins!
- Insert your SDCard into Wii U
- Open up Internet Browser
- Click on address bar and type "loadiine.ovh"
- Select "Homebrew Launcher v1.4" from there
- Tap on "Load"
- If your Wii U gets stuck on Wii U screen, turn it off and turn it on again.
Alright. Thanks to @pwsincd, you don't need PC in order to grab HBL!
Here's how you can skip PC step:
Here's how you can skip PC step:
- Insert your SDCard into Wii U

3.Mocha CFW Set up [Without redNAND]
Now since you have access to Homebrew Launcher, you can download Mocha CFW! Ready for region-free?
This is where HBAS will get it's use!
Now after you did that, you should now see Mocha CFW in Homebrew Launcher. Tap on it then tap Load.
You set up Mocha CFW! That was quick!
- Tap on Appstore
- Tap on Load
- Tap again after it loads
- Now you should see categories, tap on "Tools" category
- Find Mocha CFW, tap on it and tap on "Get!"
- After it's done downloading, press Home button on your Wii U gamepad
Now after you did that, you should now see Mocha CFW in Homebrew Launcher. Tap on it then tap Load.
In this guide, i want you to turn off redNAND option! It's only good for developers and shouldn't be used to play games! Use DPAD to change options.
- Relaunch OS -> ON [Relaunch OS if System Settings or other app is launched]
- Show custom bootscreen on launch ON [or OFF if you dislike Mocha CFW logo]
- redNAND OFF
4. Haxchi Installation
For this you need to purchase Brain Age/compatible DS VC game from eShop.
Haxchi swaps rom.zip of your DS VC game with a exploited one. Why only DS VC? DS VC is faster to bootup and to get everything done!
NOTE:
NNIDs created in 2014 got Brain Age for free! Also Brain Age is cheapest DS VC out there!
After you install Haxchi, you will be unable to play that game until you delete your DS VC game.
[! = Deleting CBHC'd game will result in a brick, deleting normal Haxchi game installed with Haxchi Installer will not brick your system]
Back into HBL!
Now, tap on that DS VC game. Oh look! Homebrew Launcher!
Did you know that Haxchi has it's own built-in CFW? With this method, you will be able to boot into Haxchi's CFW! But you need to eject out your SDCard. [In Wii U Menu of course]
Now you will see config.txt here. This is where fun begins.
Now insert your SDCard back into your Wii U and run Haxchi'd DS VC.
Now from there run Haxchi Installer and let it overwrite your Haxchi'd game with new configuration.
Now to get into Homebrew Launcher, you need to hold A while starting up Haxchi.
If you do nothing, you will get booted into Haxchi CFW! No need to use Mocha CFW anymore!
Congratulations! You're done! Permament HBL solution, that feels good doesn't it?
- Download/Purchase then download Brain Age/exploitable DS VC from eShop
- For list of exploitable games, click this -> Compatible DS VC games
Now you need to fire up Internet Browser and repeat Browserhax step again. [Load loadiine.ovh, select that and bam!]
Now load Appstore.
Help! It's not working!
Don't worry i have quick fix for you!
Now load Appstore.
- You can find Haxchi Installer in Tools section of Homebrew Appstore!
Help! It's not working!
Don't worry i have quick fix for you!
- Delete Brain Age and redownload it from eShop
- Check if Haxchi Installer isn't corrupted [Instead of Haxchi Installer, you get black screen]
- If it does give you black screen, delete Haxchi Installer using Appstore and download it again
Tap on Haxchi Installer then tap on Load
- Now you're prompted with Haxchi installer
- Select your Legitimely purchased Brain Age DS VC
- Press A on it
- It should begin overwriting DS VC game
- After it's done, it will kick you back to Wii U Menu
Did you know that Haxchi has it's own built-in CFW? With this method, you will be able to boot into Haxchi's CFW! But you need to eject out your SDCard. [In Wii U Menu of course]
- Now, you have your SDCard in your hands. Insert it to your PC again.
Now you will see config.txt here. This is where fun begins.
- If you don't see it, create .txt file named config
- After you opened it up, you see some strange stuff. With this config file, you can bind buttons to your liking!
Quick explaination: wiiu/apps/<Homebrew's folder name>/<Homebrew's .elf file>
sysmenu = This argument will boot you into Haxchi's Built-in CFW
Set it to something like this:
sysmenu = This argument will boot you into Haxchi's Built-in CFW
Set it to something like this:
- a=wiiu/apps/homebrew_launcher/homebrew_launcher.elf
- b=wiiu/apps/<Homebrew's directory>/<Homebrew's .elf file>
- default=sysmenu
Now from there run Haxchi Installer and let it overwrite your Haxchi'd game with new configuration.
Now to get into Homebrew Launcher, you need to hold A while starting up Haxchi.
If you do nothing, you will get booted into Haxchi CFW! No need to use Mocha CFW anymore!
5. Brazilian Method
Thanks to our brazil friends for this! [DLC, CFW-Only Games and other]
Brazillian Method, as this name suggests, comes from our Brazilian friends!
(Others name it 'Wup Installer Method" or "Tik faker method" but i like Brazilian Method more.)
It allows us to install legit & fake signed games, DLC and updates straight to NAND [Wii U's flash memory] or USB!
"How do i install them?" Good question. Don't worry, i know the answer
Now, let's do it from Wii U side
This is where fun part begins.
You learned Brazilian Method! Enjoy your games, dlc and updates!
(Others name it 'Wup Installer Method" or "Tik faker method" but i like Brazilian Method more.)
It allows us to install legit & fake signed games, DLC and updates straight to NAND [Wii U's flash memory] or USB!
- Eject your SDCard from Wii U
- Insert it in your PC
Wii U USB Helper is very user friendly and has a nice gui. It's one of many NUS* grabbers out there.
Let's download it!
Let's download it!
- Read this thread fully to understand & download Wii U USB Helper (Click on it)
- Run update.exe
- If it's blocked by Windows Defender/Antivirus software, simply whitelist it and run it again.

- Download Wup Installer GX2, Nice GUI for Wup Installer Mod Y or download Wup Installer Mod Y, No GUI and no touchscreen controls
- Insert it in SDCard://wiiu/apps/
- It should look something like this [example] wiiu/apps/wupymod/wupymod.elf
- Eject your SDCard from PC and insert it back to the Wii U
- If you have Haxchi, boot into CFW first, then boot Haxchi again while holding A to boot HBL
- If you still use Mocha CFW, use Browserhax to launch into HBL
This is where fun part begins.
- While being in Wup Installer GX2, select games and tap Install
- You will be prompted if you want to install your games to NAND or USB
- Select your desired install location and wait till it finishes installing every game
- While being in Wup Installer Mod Y, use D-PAD Up & Down to select games
- Press A to install it to NAND or X to install it to USB
- Wait, till it installs your game
I present to you: disc2app - Dump your Wii U discs and install them to Wii U menu! [100% legal]
The only requirement? 32GB SDCard with atleast 26GB of memory free
Time to download it. We will use appstore so you will not have to go near your PC just to download one thing.
You can delete these games by visiting "System Settings" then 'Data Management'.
You're done!
- Launch HBL using Browserhax/Haxchi/Homebrew Launcher Channel
- Tap on Appstore then tap on Load
- Tap again, then tap on "Tools" category
- Find disc2app and tap on "Get"
- After it's done, press Home button
- Remove any disc that's currently in the Wii U disc drive
- Load disc2app
- Press A to dump to SDCard
- If you gained access to IOSU, It will say "Please insert the disc you want to dump now to begin"
- Insert your x game disc now
- It might take a while to complete. It depends on game size. [It took me around 1-3h to dump SSB for example]
- Get back into Homebrew Launcher with Haxchi/Browserhax/HBLC
- Load Appstore
- Tap again, then tap on "Tools" category
- Find Wup Installer GX2/or Wup Installer Mod Y [No GUI, no Touch controls]
- Tap on "Get"
- Return to HBL after it's done by pressing Home button
- Load Wup Installer GX2/Mod Y
- On Wup Installer GX2, tap to select your games
- On Mod Y use D-PAD Up & Down to navigate through games
- On Wup Installer GX2, tap on Install and select your desired location [USB or Wii U's flash memory - NAND]
- On Wup Installer Mod Y, press A to install it to NAND or X to install it to your USB HDD
- They will both tell you when they're done with installation. When they're really done, press the home button. Then press Home button again. [If you have HBLC then tap "Close software" button]
- Now you will see your Wii U disc game in Wii U menu
You're done!
6. Dumping Wii U's NAND
I suggest doing it before CBHC. I'll explain why below.
SLC - Includes system configuration such as system.xml, sysmenu.xml and other critical parts of the Wii U (such as boot1)
SLCMTTP - vWii IOS'es, Save files and vWii stuff is stored there. Needed in-case if you screw up vWii to that state that even FTPiiU will not help.
MLC - Includes System Apps such as Wii U Menu, System Settings, Wii U Browser etc. It also includes your installed games, saves and (partial, most of it is stored in SLC) Wii U configuration. I really suggest dumping it in-case if your Wii U menu refuses to work one day. [Keep in mind: Wii U menu is needed to boot Wii U]
OTP - [Quote from WiiUBrew] "The One Time Programmable memory is programmed sometime during the factory process and can never be changed afterwards. The Wii U's OTP is much larger than the Wii's (1KB split across 8 banks of 128 bytes each) and contains an assortment of read-only data, including the console's encryption/decryption keys."
In other words, you need it to decrypt SLC, SLCMTTP and MLC. Keep it mind, you can't decrypt boot1 with it.
SEEPROM - Serial EEPROM, Includes console information, boot parameters and other stuff. It includes some calls to SLC so i guess it might come in-handy when fixing your Wii U.

SEEPROM - Serial EEPROM, Includes console information, boot parameters and other stuff. It includes some calls to SLC so i guess it might come in-handy when fixing your Wii U.
- If you plan on dumping MLC [Wii U Menu, Games, System Files & Apps] then i suggest grabbing 16GB SDCard for 8GB Wii U's and 64GB for 32GB Wii U's
- Minimum 2GB free space for SLC, SLCMTTP, OTP and SEEPROM
- Minimum 8GB/32 GB free space for MLC
- Eject SDCard from Wii U and insert it to your PC
- Click on this WiiUBrU Appstore [NAND Dumper]
- Download .zip file
- Open it and put 'nanddumper' folder in SDCard://wiiu/apps/
- Eject SDCard from PC and insert it back to Wii U
Time to load it!
- Find nanddumper.elf, tap on it then tap 'Load'
- Wait couple of seconds
- You should see following options: SLC <yes>, SLCMTTP <yes>, MLC <no>, OTP <yes>, SEEPROM <yes>
- If you want to dump MLC then you need 16GB-32GB SDCard for 8GB Wii U's [White], or 64GB SDCard for 32GB Wii U's [Black].
- Use D-Pad Left-Right to select options
- Press A after you're done selecting options [I suggest dumping everything when your SDCard is big enough]
- Wait till it completes [With MLC it takes 1h-2h or even more]
Store your NAND Dump somewhere safe [On PC]
You're done!
It's dangerous but it's number one if you want CFW on-boot!
READ EVERYTHING BELOW BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!
CBHC has a guaranteed brick if you will fail to follow simple steps. Please, read everything here.
Only install this if you're really tired from booting Haxchi CFW and would like to have patches on-boot.
Understood? Let's proceed!
CBHC has a guaranteed brick if you will fail to follow simple steps. Please, read everything here.
- Before installing CBHC, verify that your Haxchi installation works 100% [Launches Homebrew without crashing, launches Haxchi CFW correcty etc.]
- Disable Standby & Quick Menu
- Unplug every USB storage device from your Wii U [No excuses]
- DON'T TRY TO DELETE OR MOVE CBHC'd DS VC GAME!
